Hawaii - "The Big Island"
[ Kauai | Oahu | Molokai | Lanai | Maui | Hawaii ]
Overview
Formally know as Hawaii, this island is commonly referred
to as The Big Island to avoid confusion with Hawaii, the
state.
The term Big Island is true to its nickname, encompassing
over 4,000 square miles, the island is dominated by two 13,000
foot volcanoes, has rain forests lining the windward coasts
in the east, immense snowdrifts resting atop Mauna Kea, grassy
plains stretching around Waimea, and miles of desert and
lava beds dominating the Kohala Coast. The immense size of
the island and its diversity in nature have caused some people
to describe it as a "miniature continent".
Located at the southeastern side of the Hawaiian chain,
Hawaii is the youngest sister of the islands. It was the
last island in the chain to be created and is still recreating
itself to this day. Lava continuously flows from Kilauea,
the world's most active volcano.
